AstraZeneca’s new schizophrenia drug Seroquel (quetiapine) is the latest in a string of new drugs to treat the illness.
The company is planning a major new Phase III study that will test the drug for its potential to treat schizophrenia.
The new study, which is being conducted by the company, will compare its efficacy to a standard antipsychotic called quetiapine (Seroquel).
“Quetiapine, which is marketed as Seroquel, is the second-most prescribed antipsychotic in the US, behind chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and olanzapine (Zyban).”
It’s thought that Seroquel will help treat “major depressive disorder” in people with bipolar disorder, a condition where symptoms include depression and fatigue.
The drug is sold under a generic name, Seroquel (generic name: quetiapine), for treating schizophrenia. Seroquel was originally approved for treatment of schizophrenia and treatment of manic episodes.
“It’s an exciting time for the company to be making a big difference,” said Dr. Peter Dunn, professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a co-director of the National Institute of Mental Health. “This study will give us a new hope for treating schizophrenia in people with the symptoms of this condition.”
The drug is approved for the treatment of adults with schizophrenia, but some doctors say the drug should be taken in the elderly. It is not recommended for use in children. Doctors should not be prescribing Seroquel for other conditions.
The drug is currently only available by prescription in the US. Seroquel can be bought over the counter through mail or through pharmacies in Canada or Mexico.
“The only way to find out is to get a prescription from your doctor,” said Dr. John D. Lechleiter, who oversees the drug’s development. “If you’re a doctor and you want to buy Seroquel, you might as well ask for a prescription.”
The drug’s patent was issued in 1992 and was later struck down in 2013 for a reason. “The patent on Seroquel is valid until April 1, 2020,” said a spokesman for Teva Pharmaceuticals. “It’s a very expensive medicine, and the patent will expire in April 2020.”

Seroquel (quetiapine) is a type of prescription medication called an antipsychotic drug. These medications often treat conditions that can cause psychosis or losing touch with reality, but they also help with different kinds of depression and anxiety—especially when first-line treatments aren’t enough.
There are two types of antipsychotic drugs. “Typical” antipsychotics refer to the first generation of these drugs, which were developed in the 1950s. “Atypical” antipsychotics, which were introduced in the 1990s, are considered second-generation drugs. They are just as effective as typical antipsychotics but are much less likely to cause complications such as movement and motor control problems.
Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic. It changes how certain chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) work in the brain.
Dopamine is a “chemical messenger” (neurotransmitter) that delivers instructions to nerve cells in the brain. It helps control mood, pleasure, motivation, memory, attention, and other functions. Serotonin is also a chemical messenger. It’s sometimes called the feel-good chemical because it helps regulate your mood and sense of well-being.
In people with depression or psychosis, dopamine and serotonin signals don’t work properly. Seroquel (quetiapine) works by blocking these abnormal signals.
Typical antipsychoticsSeroquel is approved by the FDA to treat symptoms of depression, such as loss of interest in activities, difficulty paying attention, and changes in mood. It also is approved to treat psychosis (manifested with Strattera) and psychosis (manifested with Abilify).
